
Google Chrome’s Enhanced Protection has been getting smarter at spotting scammy websites and suspicious downloads by running an AI model directly on your device. This on-device AI analyzes page content and behavior in real time to help warn you about deceptive pages — including scams that haven’t yet been added to blocklists.
While other browsers also offer scam and phishing protection, Chrome is currently the most advanced in using on-device AI for real-time scam detection. Microsoft Edge comes closest, combining reputation services with machine-learning-based protections such as SmartScreen and its newer scareware detection features.
Browsers like Firefox and Safari still rely primarily on traditional blocklists and warning systems, and their AI-driven protections are best described as works in progress rather than full equivalents to Chrome’s approach.
Until recently, Chrome’s AI-powered protection was always enabled when you turned on Enhanced Protection. Now, Chrome gives you more control.
How Chrome’s On-Device AI Helps
Chrome’s on-device AI adds an enhanced layer of security that complements traditional Safe Browsing. Instead of relying only on known threat lists, it evaluates signals from the page or download itself — allowing it to detect new or evolving scams faster, without sending browsing data to the cloud.
New Option: Turn It Off (If You Want)
Chrome now allows you to remove the local AI model that powers this protection if you choose.
To do this:
- Open Chrome Settings
- Go to System
- Turn off the setting labeled “On-device GenAI” (or similar)
- The local AI models will be removed from your device
This option is currently rolling out in Chrome Canary and is expected to reach stable releases soon.
